Netflix is collaborating with Mojang Studios, the creators of the immensely popular game “Minecraft,” to develop an animated series based on the sandbox phenomenon. Set to be CG-animated, the series promises an original storyline featuring new characters, offering a fresh perspective on the iconic “Minecraft” universe.
The project is being helmed by WildBrain, the Canadian animation studio recognized for its work on various Netflix productions such as “Sonic Prime,” “Ninjago: Dragons Rising,” and “Carmen Sandiego.” This endeavor follows Netflix’s successful revival of WildBrain’s “Johnny Test” in 2022, showcasing the studio’s prowess in delivering engaging animated content.
Since its launch in 2011, “Minecraft” has captivated audiences worldwide with its distinctive pixelated aesthetic and immersive gameplay, boasting a staggering monthly player base of over 140 million individuals. The game’s enduring popularity has spawned numerous spinoffs, including “Minecraft: Story Mode,” “Minecraft Earth,” “Minecraft Dungeons,” and “Minecraft Legends.”
In addition to the Netflix series, Mojang has another exciting adaptation in the pipeline—a feature film backed by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. With a star-studded cast featuring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and Emma Myers, and directed by Jared Hess, the movie is scheduled for release on April 4, 2025.
The announcement of the Netflix series coincides with Mojang’s celebration of the original “Minecraft” game’s 15th anniversary, further underscoring the enduring impact and cultural significance of this beloved franchise.
